A wonderful Community Suburb
Kensington is one of the best places to live in Melbourne. There is a good community and village feel here, and a small collection of great cafes and bars that come without the attitude you’d find in other inner city suburbs. Once a working class suburb that was all but ignored, Kensington has well and truly become one of the “in” suburbs. And it's only 3 train stops from the city centre.
Kensington has plenty of professionals, young families, and people with a social conscience. There are still some old time working class folk, people on welfare, and migrants who live in public housing flats. The arty set have organised an annual short film festival. There is an annual run for local residents and an annual Women in Kensington dinner. The suburb has tree-lined streets and plenty of Victorian cottages that have been renovated. A large number of new townhouses have gone up in what were once Victoria’s largest cattle saleyards. That development is called Kensington Banks.
